Maine Maritime - More Than a - Museum
One of our favorite places to visit in the local area is the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Being only a little over a half hour from Bayberry House, its perfect for a rainy day, or anytime for that matter. Most people know there are numerous exhibits tracing Maine's extensive history of shipbuilding, fishing, and maritime commerce. But did you realize how many more things there are to do there than an informative stroll through the galleries? Just some of the amazing other things to see and do are:
The Museum arranges tours by trolley and water through the adjacent Bath Iron Works, one of America's most important naval shipyards. Currently, the next Zumwalt class destroyer is under construction.
Several unique crusies depart the museum, including a six hour Windjammer's Day Cruise on June 28th, a Fireworks Cruise on the 4th of July, and a rare opportunity to tour Portland Head Light on July 12th. These are signle offerings, so I would advise making reservations as early as possible. In addition to these, several other tours depart periodically through the summer.
Enjoy canoeing and/or kayaking? From August 28th to September 2nd, the museum is offering an opportunity for paddling enthusiasts to build their very own canoe or kayak under the guidance of local boatbuilder Eric Schade. Again, places are very limited and early reservations are strongly advised. For those wanting to craft something for dry land, courses are also offered in making an Adirondack Chair, Shaker Boxes, and Fireside Stools.
The Museum also offers navigation courses, both general boating safety and some unique to cruising the waters of Midcoast Maine.
We'd love to answer any quesytions you have about the museum and/or its other offerings, or you can call the Museum itself at (207) 443-1316 or visit their website at www.MaineMaritime Museum.org. Enjoy!
