Fisherman's Festival Only the First of Great Things to Come!
This past weekend I had the pleasure to sample some of the wonderful activities at Boothbay Harbor's Fisherman's Festival. In between making breakfast for our great guests and refreshing their rooms on Saturday, I had the chance to mosey downtown to down a few delicious tidbits of food and drink and view some of the day's events, including the Tug of War bouts. Although the competitive nature of Tug of War was clearly in evidence, the sportsmanship and camaraderie of the teams was even more so. After that, I visit the Arts and Crafts show, once again marveling at the creativity and level of talent displayed by our local artisans. On Sunday, the blessing of the fleet was an inspiring event and moved me to consider that, even with the benefit of modern technology, those who make a living from the sea still lead a quite perilous existence, not too much different than their ancestors did in the ages of sail and steam.
On the negative side, I felt badly about missing such intriguing events as the Cod Fish Relay and Lobster Crate Running, vowing I will definitely find a way to watch them next year. My hat's off to the people who organized and ran the weekend's activities, knowing that it takes a lot of hard work to plan and put on an event this great.
For those of you who missed it, however, realize it is only the first in Boothbay Harbor's 2014 calendar of fantastic events. In late June, the week long festivities of Windjammer Days return. July's Lobster Roll 5K race seems like a great time as does the Harbor Fest, two weeks of fun at the end of August and the beginning of September. Karine and I fondly recall last September's Claw Down competition, and all of the wonderfully creative and tasty ways that local chefs prepared our fair town's most iconic ingredient. Adding to this already full schedule is this year's celebration of Boothbay Harbor's 250th Anniversary, August 22nd to 24th.
Once again, Karine and I feel thankful to have had the great fortune to move to such a wonderful place as Boothbay Harbor, a small town with so much to see and do. For those of you visiting us this summer, I hope you are as excited to experience this tremendous range of activities as we are. For those of you who are still undecided as to whether to come to Boothbay Harbor, you still have time to make your reservations. Don't miss out on a summer full of small town fun!
